Tenri University is a Japanese private university in Tenri, Nara Prefecture, an independent part of the secular mission of Tenrikyo.
Founded in 1925, Tenri University now boasts over 30,000 alumni who have benefited from its educational goals of enhancing each student’s potential, of fostering his or her global awareness, and of instilling in each individual the desire to contribute to the overall improvement of the human condition. Based on the humanistic teachings of the Tenrikyo religion, promoting the world of the “Joyous Life” for all humankind, the University’s long history of applying this educational philosophy, in a manner suited to the needs of each generation, is the foundation of its proud tradition.
The University, located within the embrace of a religious environment known as the original home of humankind and called the “Jiba,” aims at imparting specialized knowledge and an enriched education through close personal ties between faculty, staff, and students with a life of prayer and devotion as its basis. To this end, the University has established the Faculty of Human Studies, the Faculty of Letters, the Faculty of International Studies, the Faculty of Budo and Sport Studies, and the Graduate School of Clinical Human Studies, and provides a place for interdisciplinary research with the objective of identifying and developing the natural potential of each individual.
